I’m in the World and so are YouNovember 21st, 2024
An exhibition collaboratively conceived and produced by student artists enrolled in the “Collective Art Practice” course, led by guest lecturer and St. Elmo Fellow Pablo Tut. Throughout the fall semester, these artists have discussed how their social settings, political influences, unique cultural backgrounds, and engagements with an overwhelming digital mediascape inform their art practices and reflect their personal and community interests. I’m in the world and so are you explores the effects of digital mass media through disparate material forms and extends the students' conversations to the UT and Greater Austin Communities.
This media projection focuses primarily on two concepts: overstimulation technological advancements- allowing for quick access to information, for better or worse, and our inability to respond in effective action to what we see. In our political system, we are left as mere bystanders to the decisions of those in power of authority. I present a looping animation engaging in an activity known as "doom-scrolling"- appearing overwhelmed with what she finds online. The background will be video art including pictures and videos of current issues, such as the war in Gaza. Her horrified demeanor will highlight an underlying problem with
said conflicts, and how we can only watch these devastating events through our screens, as our power to overcome is limited/nonexistent.
The sculpture provided for projection map was created by fellow artist, Sienna Haynes.
